And while approximately 95% of companies are using the cloud in some way, hybrid cloud adoption is outpacing both public and private cloud adoption. Adoption of Hybrid Cloud Continues to Explode
According to a Tech Pro Research article, “By combining system elements from on-premises systems, private cloud networks, and third-party public cloud services, enterprises can achieve a unique infrastructure that matches their information technology requirements at any point in time.” A hybrid approach can offer greater flexibility, adaptability, and scalability. With all signs pointing to increased cloud adoption in the coming years, most survey respondents also reported a skills shortage hindering anticipated cloud implementation and growth. In fact, 94% noted greater need for hybrid cloud skills.
Hybrid Cloud Challenges
A lack of necessary skills is concerning because hybrid cloud environments are not without their own set of unique challenges. According to a CSO Online article, “Hybrid models offer many well-documented benefits, but they also introduce more complexity for securing data and applications across the enterprise.” This complexity requires a unique set of skills, including infrastructure configuration, application design, network architecture building, and business process automation expertise. Hybrid cloud architects and engineers need to be able to effectively ensure private and public cloud setups are compatible; attain and maintain compliance and security requirements; as well as address bandwidth, availability, and redundancy considerations.
For hybrid clouds, IT personnel must not only manage multiple environments but must also work alongside cloud service providers. Roles and responsibilities can become blurry, further frustrating IT staff members already struggling with lacking resources.
Closing the Hybrid Cloud Skills Gap
According to the SUSE survey, nearly three-quarters of organizations are struggling with how to address this shortage. Many are scrambling to find and retain skilled IT personnel but keep coming up short. These high-demand skill sets are challenging to find, but also expensive to keep. There are other options — training current IT staff and partnering with third-party cloud services providers. However, while training in-house teams is crucial to enhancing business operations, it often isn’t enough. Many in-house IT teams struggle to keep up with putting out fires while meeting demands to innovate.
