I decided on a last-minute change to the agenda for a seminar I recently led at Microsoft’s Technology Center in Irvine. The general topic I was to speak about was the adoption of cloud for business. In recent meetings with some of our clients, I realized that the biggest obstacle for organizations in their cloud adoption initiative is not technology, but organizational inertia. It came to me that every organization, including my own, is a type of social unit that behaves both rationally and irrationally.
When you set aside the hype, the cloud promise is not about better technology but rather new ways to consume applications, and without having to deeply understand underlying technologies. The cloud adoption wave is driven by the economics of labor and cost efficiency. However, end-to-end automation and efficiency often turn technical staff into internal objectors due to job security fears.
Resistance to change is normal, especially when staff are already overloaded, need to learn new skills, and perhaps fears a loss of authority or control. So, what can you do to convert your organization’s internal objectors into enthusiasts, or at least followers?
First, make sure that a strategic cloud initiative is not derailed by politics. The initiative should be strongly endorsed by the CEO and led by a member of the organization that is both respected and garners trust. This will encourage everyone within the organization to appreciate the strategic value of coordinated efforts between teams.
Next, recognize that cloud adoption is an opportunity for team members to learn new skills, operate higher up in the technology stack, and see potential results. Plan to invest in new skills for staff that will bring greater value to the organization. Make sure that staff understands what is in it for them.
Last, invest in outside guidance from experienced cloud adoption consultants who can help you implement your strategy and avoid common mistakes. These professionals can ensure your cloud migration is executed on a professional level with minimal risk to your organization.
The promise of cloud for business is considerable, and companies that adopt the technology are certain to achieve advantages over their industry peers. These advantages compel firms to overcome their organizational inertia obstacle in cloud adoption. Consider the approach I’ve outlined along with great leadership, motivation, and communication to turn your objectors into followers.
