How the Cloud kept Buffalo area businesses running despite a massive storm

December 1, 2014 - by Synoptek

Residents in the Buffalo, New York, region are still recovering from a massive snowstorm that covered the city with more than 7 feet of snow. Structural damages are still being assessed, and residents are expecting significant interior water damage from the melting snow. With community safety services working on clearing the roads, and many residents trapped in their own homes, it seemed that businesses in the Buffalo area would be non-operational until the disaster was over. However, for business that migrated to the cloud like, Algonquin Studios, it was business as usual during the storm.

David Thiemecke, co-founder of Algonquin Studios said their company suffered no downtime caused by the storm, and any issues could be monitored and fixed remotely. Luckily, the Web consulting company had also moved most of its operations to the Cloud to further secure its data, and allow employees to work from home. Algonquin Studios was able to send early communications to its 27 employees informing them to avoid driving, and to remain productive by working from home.

“Between our VPN access and services already migrated to the cloud, most people could reach their full environment from home even without prior notice. That includes our support teams,” Thiemecke said.

Just like Algonquin, 360 PSG had all of their client systems in the cloud, and all production work in virtual data centers in Dallas and New Jersey. “We were lucky in that we were able to communicate with all our people before they even attempted to leave their homes. The stories we had were simply that they were literally buried under the snow, impossible to get in their vehicles (or even see them) in their driveways,” Colombo said. “Our culture and our team are most important to us here and it makes no sense to push through the “hours of the day” and risk anyone’s safety,” he said.
