All Microsoft products have a lifecycle, typically 10 years, that starts when the product is released and ends when support ends. Come October 2018, mainstream support for Dynamics AX 2009 and AX 2012 will end.

Post 2018, there will be no way to upgrade your current AX 2009 or AX 2012 environment to Microsoft Dynamics 365 and move the data you have created over the last decade or so.
Microsoft will only offer security updates free of cost; any hotfixes, upgrades, or service packs will be charged.
If you face any product or security issue, you may not easily find partners or resources to support your old ERP.
